Our Favorite Apple Crisp Recipe

  • This easy apple crisp recipe is perfect any time of year, especially fall!
  • It’s budget-friendly & uses ingredients you likely have in the pantry already.
  • Prep it ahead of time and bake just before serving.

Apple Crisp vs. Cobbler

What makes an apple crisp recipe different than an apple cobbler is the topping. Apple cobbler often has a biscuit or pie dough topping, while an apple crisp topping has an oat streusel topping.

ingredients for apple crisp

Apples For Apple Crisp

  • Granny Smith Apples are the best apples for this crisp recipe. They hold their shape well, have the perfect texture, and a slightly tart flavor that pairs well with the sweet crumbly topping.
  • For a sweeter crisp, use a sweeter apple like Honeycrisp, Braeburn, or Pink Lady, or even combine a couple of types of apples!

Apples should be peeled for apple crisp as the skins don’t soften well.

How to Make Apple Crisp

Forget “as easy as pie”, making apple crisp is even and easier than apple pie. This crisp recipe has a generous amount of topping, it’s my favorite part!

  1. Prepare Apples: Peel and slice apples. Toss with all-purpose flour, sugar, and cinnamon in a mixing bowl (per the recipe below).
  2. Prepare Topping: Mix the topping ingredients together until it begins to form large crumbs.
  3. Bake: Place apples in a baking dish, top with the crumb mixture, and bake until golden and bubbly.

How to Freeze Apple Crisp

Freeze apple crisp either before or after baking! It will keep in a deep freezer for up to 6 months and in a top freezer for 2-3 months.

Allow the crisp to thaw overnight in the fridge before reheating or baking.

Notes

Granny Smith apples are tart but you can use any kind of apples that hold up well to baking.
Apple crisp can be prepared ahead of time and baked before serving, add 1 teaspoon of lemon juice to the apple slices if preparing ahead of time. If the dish is cold from the fridge, it may need extra time to bake.
The topping can be made in large batches and frozen. To prepare crisp, make a fresh fruit filling and sprinkle the topping on right from frozen. Bake as directed.

  3. Used this recipe for Apple Crisp for the first time today; followed precisely, with a mix of Granny Smith apples and Fuji. These two apples gave a nice contrast of sweet and tart. 6. I bake my apple crisp for about 15 min without the topping then add the topping and finish baking. I find the topping stays crisper that way.

  10. Thank you for directly answering the question about freezing! I didn’t know if the an entire homemade uneaten crisp could be frozen, I’ve only portioned out single servings (so I don’t eat the entire thing!). What is the best way to wrap my crisps to freeze? I just need to freeze for one week. Thanks!5 stars
