How to Make Italian Seasoning

Making your own Italian Seasoning is easy and allows you to adjust the flavors to your tastes. Many store-bought seasonings can be high in salt – this homemade version is salt-free and gluten-free (just double-check your dried herbs!). Additionally, making spice blends at home is often more cost-effective than purchasing pre-made versions.

Simply mix the spices in the recipe below and store it in a jar or an airtight container for up to 6 months. You can keep it longer since the spices are dried, but it will begin to lose flavor.

  1. I wonder why you say “the perfect blend of spices…” when the only spice is chilli flakes. Surely it should be called “the perfect blend of herbs with chilli…”
I have been using this for over 12 months in all sorts of cooking and love the recipe. I am just about to make a 3rd lot since I found the recipe.4 stars

    1. Hi Sandra, we refer to all the ingredients in the recipe as spices. I’m glad you are enjoying it!

  2. I really thought I’d reviewed this before. This is my go to recipe for Italian seasoning. I love being able to source it with spices I already have and that it’s salt-free (I love salt but too many spice blends lean on salt and you never know what you’re going to end up with). 5-stars!

PS – making another batch now! :-)5 stars

    1. Hi Lon, perhaps you are thinking of a different recipe? This recipe does not include any of those ingredients.

  3. I use this seasoning on so many dishes! It’s great for meats, gravies, veggies, etc. It gives the right amount of seasoning and kick to anything savory. Sometimes I add coriander or marjoram to the mix. Thank you!5 stars

  5. I’ve been craving pasta these days, so I was thinking of grabbing Italian food for dinner with my friends later. Thank you for letting us know that Italian seasoning uses a blend of herbs and spices to give an extra mild flavor to our pasta sauces. I’ll keep this in mind while I look for a nearby authentic Italian restaurant we can go to for dinner later.

  6. Your blog is impressive, thanks to the quality of your recipes & other content….

  7. Great recipe for so many dishes…but do especially love it as a salad topper with some EVO and white vinegar plus a dash of salt! Fresh and delicious!! Much more healthy than store bought dressings!! thank you5 stars
